Delegates from the Indiana Agriculture Leadership Program (ALP) had an insightful day exploring Ghana’s agricultural landscape. The morning began with a visit to Ekumfi Juice, one of Ghana’s leading juice producers. The delegation toured the facility to see the full production process—from sourcing fresh fruits to processing, quality control, and packaging. They engaged with the production team, asking questions about operational workflows, sustainability practices, and challenges in scaling local agribusinesses. To top it off, the Ekumfi Juice team generously provided delegates with some of their signature drinks to enjoy on the road, a thoughtful gesture that set a warm and interactive tone for the day.

From there, the group traveled to Accra to meet with the Ministry of Agriculture. Led by the Chief Director, discussions focused on the Feed Ghana Initiative, aimed at adding value to agricultural produce and strengthening support for farmers. Key highlights included the creation of Farmer Service Centres, which go beyond mechanization services to offer extension support, advisory services, and more. Currently, there are 220 mechanization service units, with facility management handled by private operators to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

The delegation also engaged with Hon. Bright Demordzi, National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, and the Technical Advisor to the Minister of Food and Agriculture, learning about strategies to enhance productivity and support farmers. The day concluded with a visit to the Agricultural Insurance Pool, which provides farmers with financial protection against crop losses, price fluctuations, and climate-related risks. Delegates gained valuable insight into how the insurance pool is helping to de-risk agriculture, encourage investment in mechanization, and ensure more resilient livelihoods for Ghanaian farmers. This rounded off a meaningful exploration of Ghana’s dynamic agricultural ecosystem.
